Today’s Tip
Even the best business plans can be disrupted by unexpected events. The key to success is having a clear mission statement and using it to guide your decisions when things go wrong.
A mission statement defines what your business is trying to achieve. When faced with a challenge, refer to your mission statement to make strategic decisions that keep you on track.
For example, Starbucks' mission statement is “to inspire and nurture the human spirit- one person, one cup, and one neighborhood at a time.” Based on this mission statement, the company might make business decisions as follows:
Community Engagement Programs: Launching initiatives to support local communities through partnerships and events.
Sustainable Sourcing Practices: Committing to ethically sourced coffee beans and environmentally friendly practices.
Employee Development Programs: Investing in training and benefits to nurture their employees' growth and well-being.
Expansion into Underserved Neighborhoods: Opening stores in neighborhoods lacking access to quality coffee shops.
Customer Experience Enhancements: Introducing personalized customer experiences to make each interaction meaningful.
Charitable Contributions: Donating a portion of profits to charitable causes aligned with their mission.
Likewise, when employee’s are faced with an issue such as a challenging customer, by thinking about the company’s mission, they can better manage how they interact with this customer.
By having a mission statement and using it during difficult times, you'll be better equipped to make the right decisions and get your business back on track. Here's how to craft a clear and effective one:
Keep it short and sweet: Aim for two sentences or less. A concise statement is easier to remember and will resonate with your team. Think of Tesla's mission: "To accelerate the world's transition to sustainable energy."
Think long-term: Your mission should reflect your long-term goals. Apple's mission, "To bring the best user experience to its customers through its iovative hardware, software, and services," highlights their commitment to constant iovation.
Explain what you do: Clearly state your core function. Uber's mission, "To bring transportation – for everyone, everywhere," leaves no doubt about their purpose.
Explain how you function: Briefly mention your approach. Lush's mission statement, "To make products by hand with only vegetarian ingredients with little to no preservatives," incorporates their core process and values.
Explain why you do it: Conveying your passion is key. Penguin Random House's mission, "Together, our mission is to foster a universal passion for reading..." clarifies their reason for being.
